Keeping Up With Reality Shows
We now live in a generation where all there is on television is reality shows. No matter what channel to flip to there is 90 percent chance that there will be a reality show. Most reality shows are about famous celebrities that love showing how they "really" are. In my opinion reality shows are nor good nor bad. For example you learn something from everything you watch. I remember the very first reality show I watched was Laguna Beach on MTV. The show followed a group of teenagers in high school from Laguna Beach. It showed all the drama and love triangles that "happen" in high school. Personally I loved the show but after finding out that it was scripted as well as the show that followed the main character from the first season of Laguna Beach, the Hills. I agree with the speaker from The Ted Talk video that reality shows are fun to watch, but I also believe that they are interesting to a certain extend. One thing that I dislike is that they give a show to people who say and do the dumbest things. For example, there is a new show on E! Network that follows around a group of adults in there mid 20's. The show is called "The Rich Kids of Beverly Hills." I have watched the show about twice and I have to say it is the most superficial show I have ever watched. I honestly believe that shows that leave no education whatsoever are pointless and most of the reality shows fall into that category. I personally believe that there are shows that are good and I have a lot of interest in watching them, but shows like the ones on MTV and E! I 'm not a big fan of.

To Be Smart or Not...
After reading Dana Stevens’ article Thinking Outside the Idiot Box and Steven Johnson’s article Watching TV Makes You Smarter, I honestly have to say that I side with Dana Stevens. When I read Stevens’ article I like how she kept referring back to Johnson’s article. I agree with Stevens because in reality if we aren’t watching something education like the Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel it really isn’t doing us any good. All the reality TV and series all that t is teaching us is what not to do with our lives. I do agree that there are some series that have helped people realize what they want to do with their lives. For example, Law and Order or all the CSI shows have made young people want to go into the field of law or become something in the field of forensics. I honestly don’t believe that a majority of people like shows with a complex story line because if that was the case then all the reality shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Jersey Shore wouldn’t be such popular shows. I honestly believe that instead of TV helping us it is making us less smarter. Many people pick up the stupidest things. For example after Jersey Shore came out you had millions of guys saying “GTL” (gym, tan, laundry) or because of the Kardashian’s I have personally have heard many girls saying “bible” when they want someone to believe what they are saying. I personally think that even cartoons now days aren’t educational. Children watch TV for entertainment but because of certain shows they pick up bad habits. For example, my two younger sisters have picked up words that I am personally not used to hearing such as answering with “DUH” or “I DUNNO.” Personally I think that there are certain shows that might probably make you smarter but majority of the shows that everyone watches don’t’ do anyone any good.

Controlling My Habits
After a series of articles that we
have read in English class it’s really come to my attention how bad my “social
media habits” are. I realized after going 24 hours without being able to use
any apps on my phone or computer that I don’t really have a problem. I think
that if I were to go back in time to when I was 15, then I would have a
problem. I could live without my phone now, I don’t have any addiction with
social media. Although I have definitely seen many people that do. For instance
I know a guy that was so into playing video games 24/7 that when he had to go
use the bathroom he would rather go inside his room. As gross as that sounds it
makes you realize to what extend people are willing to go with this addiction
to social media. A lot of people have problems with watching too much
television or being on the phone or computer too much. It’s to the point where
there are rehab center for this. I think that we are living in a generation
where we rely more on our phones than actually doing the work ourselves. I
believe that there should be people making awareness towards this kind of
problem. I honestly fear that one day instead of their being an actual
professor in our classrooms there will be a robot or something. We should all
have some sort of control over how much time we spent watching television. For
instance there should be some kind of self-control. I honestly propose that we
all cut our time from technology use. That just a start and then we can all
continue from there.

Tweet Tweet !
I went 24
without logging into any social media. I did not go on Instagram or Twitter. I
honestly thought it was going to be really hard for me but it really was not. I
thought I was not going to be able to do it but I did. I got to admit that when
I felt really bored it was so hard not to actually click on the apps but I was
determined to get through a whole 24 hours and I did. I did my all my homework,
read a book, went for a jog, and even got to catch up in some of my favorite
shows. I honestly have to say that it was really cool to see how not going on
Instagram or Twitter was. I went on recently and I honestly did not miss much.
People post the same things daily. I saw about 15+ tweets about how they wanted
to go home and how hungry they were. I’m honestly thinking of just getting rid
of them for good.
