To Be Smart or Not...
After reading Dana Stevens’ article Thinking Outside the Idiot Box and Steven Johnson’s article Watching TV Makes You Smarter, I honestly have to say that I side with Dana Stevens. When I read Stevens’ article I like how she kept referring back to Johnson’s article. I agree with Stevens because in reality if we aren’t watching something education like the Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel it really isn’t doing us any good. All the reality TV and series all that t is teaching us is what not to do with our lives. I do agree that there are some series that have helped people realize what they want to do with their lives. For example, Law and Order or all the CSI shows have made young people want to go into the field of law or become something in the field of forensics. I honestly don’t believe that a majority of people like shows with a complex story line because if that was the case then all the reality shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Jersey Shore wouldn’t be such popular shows. I honestly believe that instead of TV helping us it is making us less smarter. Many people pick up the stupidest things. For example after Jersey Shore came out you had millions of guys saying “GTL” (gym, tan, laundry) or because of the Kardashian’s I have personally have heard many girls saying “bible” when they want someone to believe what they are saying. I personally think that even cartoons now days aren’t educational. Children watch TV for entertainment but because of certain shows they pick up bad habits. For example, my two younger sisters have picked up words that I am personally not used to hearing such as answering with “DUH” or “I DUNNO.” Personally I think that there are certain shows that might probably make you smarter but majority of the shows that everyone watches don’t’ do anyone any good.
